What you will need
Stocking pattern
Fabric for the main body of the stocking and for the cuff e.g. Ulster Weavers Tea Towel
Light weight fabric for the lining e.g. old pillow case
Scissors
Needle and Thread
Sewing machine
Pins
Iron and Ironing Board
Method: How to make your own Christmas Stocking
1. Download and print our stocking pattern HERE. It consists of x1 stocking pattern piece, x1 Cuff pattern piece and x1 loop pattern piece.
2. Select a fabric for the main body, a contrasting fabric for the stocking cuff and a lightweight fabric for the lining. You could use an old tea towel or apron for the heavier fabric and an old pillowcase for the lighter fabric.
3. Cut out the fabric for the main body along the fold and pin the pattern piece to the fabric, ensuring that the arrow is in line with the selvedge of the cloth.
4. Cut around the pattern.
5. Do the same for the stocking cuff and lining (use the same pattern piece as the main body).
6. Repeat so you have 2 of each section apart from the loop. Cut this out of the un-folded cloth.
7. You now should have x2 stocking pieces, x2 stocking lining, x2 cuffs, and x1 loop.
8. Pin the cuff piece to the top of the main stocking piece, with right sides facing out and sew along the top, do the same but in reverse for the other side.
9. Pin the lining to the other side of the cuff and sew. Do the same on the reverse. You should now have 2 long shapes, that are the mirror image of each other.
10. Pin the 2 shapes together with the right sides facing out.
11. Sew them together with 1cm seam allowance. Start to sew them in the lining section and leave a 7cm gap, so you can turn the stocking right side out.
12. Once you’ve sewn the pieces together cut notches into the seam allowance, especially in the curved areas. This will give the stocking a much neater finish.
13. Turn the stocking right side out and press with an iron.
14. Now tuck the lining into the main body and fold down the cuff. Press with the iron.
15. For the loop, fold the pattern piece length ways and sew along the edge using a 1cm seam allowance.
16. To turn it right side out, pin a safety pin to one end and feed it through the inside. Then press this with an iron.
17. Fold this in half and sew to the inside of the stocking. You might have to hand sew this part with a needle and thread.
18. Also remember to sew up the gap in the lining using a slip stitch.
19. You can leave the stocking plain or add your own embellishments and embroidery. Pinterest is great for some ideas.
20. Hang your stocking up on Christmas Eve and wait for it to be filled by Santa Claus!
